How do you retain customers if you sell at a higher price than your competitors?
Reading time: 4 minutes
The marketplace is considered the most fiercely competitive battlefield today because in every business sector, you have to contend with thousands of competitors. Pricing is especially crucial; what happens if you offer the same product/service but sell it at a higher price than other businesses?
Today’s customers tend to compare prices when shopping to find the cheaper option for the same product. So, what strategies can help you maintain your competitive edge despite the price difference?
Make a difference
The price war seems never-ending, but it’s unwise once you’ve established your brand’s position in the market. Therefore, instead of constantly trying to lower prices than your competitors, why not proactively differentiate yourself through product/service quality to retain customers?

To sell at a high price, you need a strategy.
A prime example is Apple’s iPhone line. While mass-produced, cheaper smartphones have emerged, the iPhone remains true to its elegant design, clearly demonstrating its superior quality and sophistication. Yes, iPhones aren’t cheap, but they still hold a dominant position and enjoy the affection of customers worldwide.
Create products with cheaper versions.
Consider creating a cheaper alternative to directly compete with the competitor’s product without lowering the price of the current product. This strategy will only succeed if you adhere to some basic principles:
- You must use a distinct brand and limited-edition products. This is solely for the purpose of competing on price with your rivals.
- The costs of lower-priced sub-products need to be separated from the costs of the higher-priced main product.
If you take this approach, you must create a new brand with the idea that it is a real, profit-generating business. If the subsidiary simply occupies space across from a low-cost competitor but doesn’t generate profit, it will ultimately harm your main product.
Prices should be commensurate with quality.
While buyers often look at price before making a decision, that’s not the only factor determining whether they’ll spend money on a product. Highlight the strengths and advantages of your product that justify its price.
In marketing strategies, you need to let buyers know what benefits they receive that other cheaper products don’t. During consultations, avoid mentioning the price; instead, show customers that the higher price is justified by the value they receive.
Opening up convenient shopping opportunities.
In modern times, very few people want to spend the time or effort to own an item every time they shop. Therefore, if you sell at a low price but require customers to come to your store and wait in line, it may not be as profitable as selling at a higher price but offering home delivery.
Additional after-sales services are available.
Along with home delivery, you can offer gift wrapping, free shipping within a 5km radius, extended warranty periods, etc. This also increases your competitive advantage over rivals who want to beat you on price. While after-sales services might slightly increase costs, they are not a major concern and still leave a positive impression on customers.
Customer service

Try comparing a store that sells cheap products but isn’t willing to take responsibility for returns or exchanges if there’s a defect, and a store that charges more but is always attentive to customer complaints. Which would you choose to shop at?
In fact, customer service is extremely important. It determines whether customers will visit your store again and whether they will proactively recommend it to their family and friends. Therefore, in business, owning effective customer service tools is a worthwhile investment. Especially noteworthy is the smart call center – a professional system using modern VoIP technology that helps you save on call costs while maintaining optimal customer connectivity. Seeking new markets
Small businesses often compete with large businesses by targeting niche or niche markets that larger businesses overlook. In the retail sector, you can move your goods out of areas with intense price competition by using consignment or hiring sales associates.
Price competition in business is relentless. However, you need to know how to steer the ship wisely to bring in profits, trust, and new customers.
